GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 14 JANUARY 2019
Recreational and commercial fishing is undertaken in a sustainable way so there is no long-
term decline in fish abundance and diversity.
In the Key Focus Area of Adaptation and Resilience, one of the strategic outcomes is Noosa’s
natural environment is prepared for climate change through the maintenance and increase of
healthy, well-functioning ecosystems that facilitate diversity and movement both within and beyond
Noosa Shire.
It is also considered this opportunity will provide the potential for innovative projects to better
prepare Noosa’s environment for climate change.
The first year of monitoring results from the oyster reef pilot project are good, and suggest the
project is tracking well. There are some key areas where targets for success have not yet been
achieved, and these would be better assessed after another year of monitoring, in what was
originally planned to be a 3 year monitoring program by USC. Of particular note is the lack of
evidence to this stage of the current reef design forming a stable matrix, essential to the long term
success of the project. We also do not yet have detailed results from fish studies being undertaken
associated with the project.
Current State approvals do not allow for the next stage of the project, so significant liaison will be
required in the planning stage on the next stages of the project with State Government agencies.
Early engagement with State agencies as the approvers of this initiative will be crucial.
