GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 16 NOVEMBER 2015
3. Final recommendations
In review of the public submissions and Ecosure’s management options report, the following
flying fox management actions are recommended:
Continue education in the form of fact sheets and interpretive signs,
Continue monitoring flying foxes in the Noosa area
Create 10m buffers along common boundaries at priority management areas as per the
Ecosure report
Investigate deterrent trials being conducted by other local governments and research
organisations elsewhere
Continue to consult with the Noosa Hospital concerning aircraft strike management
Investigate trials conducted elsewhere to encourage re-establishment of flying fox camps at
low or no conflict sites
4. Costs
To implement the above actions, costs would be incurred for the creation of vegetation buffers in
priority management areas (as per Ecosure’s management options report), and the production of
interpretive signs. Contractors have been consulted and it is estimated that the works will cost
$23,522.50 as per Table 2 below.
Action Estimate Cost
(subject to final quotes)
Fauna and flora survey prior to selective vegetation clearing $3,000
Create buffers though selective vegetation clearing in priority $14,500
management areas
Vegetation offset plantings $3,000
Interpretive signs $3,000
Total $23,500
Table 2 - Costs to create further vegetation buffers and develop interpretive signs
5. Legislative requirements
The Wallace Park flying fox camp qualifies as a nationally listed camp. Any mitigation actions will
need to comply with the National Referral Guidelines for grey-headed flying fox camps and the
State Code of Practice-Ecologically sustainable management of flying fox-fox roosts. The State
Department of Environment and Heritage will need to be notified two days before commencing
management works. A fauna and flora survey is required to be undertaken prior to works.
6. Consultation
Extensive consultation has been undertaken on the Ecosure Management Options Report. It is
recommended that further on site consultation be undertaken with Noosa Parks Association, the
Wallace Park Bushland Care Group and local residents, prior to initiating vegetation buffer works.
