The variations in visitor nights are partly a function of the quality of the tourism data, but they are also
attributable to the dynamic nature of the tourism sector in general, which is inherently subject to national
and global trends. This is evidenced in Chart 5.5 which shows the source of international visitor nights in
the Noosa area in 2002 and 2012.

Proportionally, visitor nights from New Zealand, the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, the United
States has decreased, replaced by an increasing share of tourists from other European countries ,
particularly Germany, Italy and Switzerland, as well as Korea. Accordingly, while tourism trends in
Australia are often regarded as being quite volatile, the Noosa region benefits from a relatively diverse
visitor base, so reductions in visitation from one country can be offset by an uplift in visitation from
another country. In this sense Noosa is quite resilient.

Forecast visitor nights for the Sunshine Coast, the Noosa Shire area and the Noosa Heads and
Noosaville SA2s are outlined in Chart 5.6 overleaf. The forecasts have been prepared with reference to
projections by TRA for Queensland as a whole. The forecasts assume that the Sunshine Coast retains its
current share of the Queensland tourism market, and likewise Noosa maintains its current proportion of
the Sunshine Coast market.

The TRA still anticipates sound growth in visitor numbers to Queensland to 2021, which suggests that
visitor nights on the Sunshine Coast should climb from around 12.6 million in March Quarter 2014 to 19.8
million in 2023. In the Noosa-Noosaville area, total visitor nights are expected to increase from around
2.7 million in March Quarter 2014 to 4.8 million in 2023. Therefore, even assuming a conservative tourist
average spend of $50 per day on retail goods and services, the tourist retail spending market in Noosa
would increase by around $105 million between 2014 and 2023.

While Noosa Civic will continue to predominantly serve the local resident market, it will be of some
relevance to tourists. Perhaps more importantly, other centres which currently attract the tourist market,
such as Noosa Junction, Noosaville and Hasting Street should benefit to a greater extent.
