PLANNING & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 19 AUGUST 2014
In Cooroy there are currently no caravan park or camping facilities close to the town centre, with
only a campground at Cooroora Scouts Lake Macdonald. Two applications have recently been
submitted for a caravan park & other uses as well as an RV stopover at Holts Road. There is a
strong desire within the local Cooroy business community and from the Campervan and
Motorhome Club of Australia for Council to make an area available for overnight camping for self -
contained RV’s only close to the town centre to enable Cooroy to gain RV Friendly Town status
and capture the travelling market and its associated economic benefits. A separate report to
Council addressing this matter will be presented in the future.
Previous Council Consideration
At the Ordinary Meeting on 1 May 2014 Council resolved to:
A. Amend the “Infrastructure Charges Rebates for Community Organisations Policy” to
enable community organisations undertaking an Open Space (Type 2) Camp Ground or
Visitor Accommodation (Type 2) Caravan Park to be eligible for a rebate;
B. Authorise the provision of assistance to existing not for profit community groups
operating camping grounds to lodge a material change of use application for assessment;
and
C. Endorse the following actions to occur during the review of the Noosa Plan:
1. Review the appropriateness of the standard definitions relating to caravan parks and
camping grounds, the level of assessment required for such uses within each zone,
and review the Visitor Uses Code; and
2. Investigate provisions to enable existing caravan parks to expand their site
capacities during peak seasons to allow for overflow.
Finance & Risk
There is an economic risk associated with the failure to provide adequate areas for campervans
to stay overnight and increasing fines for those found camping within the road reserves as these
budget visitors, who do make a contribution to the local economy, may start to avoid Noosa.
