SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 8 AUGUST 2017
The target set by State Government and figured into Council’s Waste Recycling & Reduction
Plan calls for Queensland councils to divert 55% of waste from landfill by 2024.
The information shows that the recycling and diversion rate for the 2017FY has increased
significantly from the previous year. The significant increase in waste diversion is partly
attributable to the amount of concrete that was recycled and sold over this period. This amount of
concrete sold varies from year to year depending on the time of processing, availability of
material for sale and whether or not there are any major construction projects underway in the
region.
There continues to be more waste produced by the Noosa community year on year. It is
encouraging to note that ongoing efforts to ensure the diversion of waste has in 2017FY resulted
in a drop in the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

There has again been an increase in the recovery of all major categories of waste over the last
financial year. Kerbside recyclables collected from yellow lidded bins increased by nearly 200
tonnes. It is also worth noting that contamination rates in recycle bins remain low. Again this
improvement may be attributable to Council’s Towards Zero Waste campaign. 2017FY also saw
the reintroduction of e-waste recycling and the introduction of polystyrene recycling.
