SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 8 AUGUST 2017
Towards Zero Waste education and community engagement strategy
Garden Waste Recycling Bin
The start of 2017 saw a particular focus on preparing the community for the roll out of the
expanded garden waste recycling bin service. To ensure that this went smoothly a Community
Engagement Project Plan was produced in conjunction with the Community Engagement
Section. The phased Plan has been implemented over the last seven months and has included:
A mail-out thanking ‘early adopters’ of the garden waste service encouraging them to
promote the merits of the service (approx. 5,000 letters).
A mail-out to those about to receive the new service explaining the reasons for it and how
to properly utilise the service (approx. 10,000 letters).
A comprehensive social media campaign run through Facebook.
Numerous media articles promoting the new service.
Updates on the Noosa Council website.
Waste Education
The Waste Section’s Waste Education Officer has personally engaged with over 2872 students
and members of the community during the 2016/17 financial year. This included 696 people
during workshops/ activities during National Recycling Week in November 2016. Other highlights
include:
Tours of the Noosa Resource Recovery Facility and Landfill started in March 2017. 169
students toured the facility up until June 2017.
Battery recycling bins were placed in all Council facilities.
Over 58 Facebook posts were placed, reaching over 102,076 people.
Waste and recycling displays were held at the Noosa Show, The Men’s Shed Open Day,
World Environment Day and the Noosa Festival of Water.
Recycling at sporting grounds was actively encouraged and promoted - recycling bins are
now at the majority of the sporting grounds.
The Waste Education Officer worked with Noosa Farmers Markets to introduce recycling.
Easily identifiable Noosa Council bin lids and covers that assist recycling were used at
seventeen events.
An art competition using waste materials was organised for Noosa students. This ‘Youth
ArtCycle’ will be judged shortly.
Three screenings of the environmental movie ‘A Plastic Ocean’ were organised for the
Noosa Community. This proved to be an immensely popular event with all three
screenings completely booked out.
