9.12 TREE SURGERY
9.12.1 GENERAL
Carry out remedial tree surgery to all existing trees within and closely nearby the site. All tree surgery work
shall be carried out by a qualified arboriculturalist, in a safe and if necessary progressive manner, and
subject to prior approval.
9.12.2 NOTICE
Give sufficient notice before commencing tree surgery.
9.12.3 PRUNING
General: Comply with the recommendations of AS 4373.
9.12.4 OPERATIONS
Remove dead and decayed wood or limbs that have been broken without further wounding of the tree. If
the trees show signs of deterioration after the work has been done, carry out a program of feeding or soil
amelioration such as soil aeration, irrigation or incorporation of organic material. Continue this program until
the end of the planting establishment period.
9.12.5 PRECAUTIONS
Avoid damage to trees being treated or to nearby trees and surroundings. Do not use trees as anchors for
winching operations or bracing. Provide bracing as necessary before cutting to prevent uncontrolled
breakages and damage to surroundings.
9.12.6 DISPOSAL
Remove all pruning, branches, debris, etc. from site. If the Superintendent deems the material suitable for
mechanical chipping, this operation may be approved.
9.12.7 DRESSING
Apply a fungicidal wound dressing to cut surfaces or approved aboricultural practice, immediately after
cutting to prevent incursion of rot or disease.
9.12.8 ROOT PRUNING
Do not unduly disturb the remaining root system.
9.13 EXISTING SERVICES PROTECTION
Protect and do not disturb existing in ground services. Should a conflict arise with the root ball location /
size the Superintendent shall be advised immediately for direction.
Root balls may be modified on site under the supervision of a qualified arboriculturalist to suit specific tree
positions; however this should be avoided, as it will place further undue stress on the tree.
Services may be bridged to avoid disturbance and disperse vertical loads into a horizontal plane. Details
are to be submitted to the Superintendent for approval prior to commencement of work.
