The ICT branch is scoping the resource implications, changes and impacts to staff of the
recommended initiatives. The results of the review were recently been presented to Council’s
Audit and Risk Committee, with the progress of the implementation of the recommendations to
be reported on an ongoing basis.

5. Queensland cyber security unit

The Queensland state government announced the creation of a new $12.5 million cyber security
unit in February this year, highlighting the importance of ICT security and the associated risks of
cyber-attacks. The unit has been established to combats threats against Queensland
government information technology providing support and leadership.

The unit provided valuable information to Council during the recent malicious access to state
government mailboxes. Council ICT receives regular email bulletins from the unit on current
cyber threats. This information is simplified and passed to Council staff via Council ICT
newsletters or emails.
