4.0 WEED MANAGEMENT PLAN
Below is a summary of the methods proposed to manage the weed infestation with particular
reference to Frangipani Vine and the associated woody weed species that are hosting the vine
as well as the expected timeframes to achieve weed control at the site. Further information on
the location of weed infestations and management actions for the site is provided in Appendix
A. It is recommended that works proceed as soon as possible due to the growth and habit of
the frangipani vine infestation, which has the possibility to increase in infestation extent size by
20-30% annually.
4.1 Proposed treatment methodology
Method 1 – Cut and paste Frangipani vines and environmental weeds with herbicide
x Combinations of foliar spray and cut and paint with Glyphosate 360 + 1g of
Metsulfuron 600g/kg, depending on stem density and height of foliage.
x Foliar spray on all ground based vine leave as well as leaf to waist height.
x Cut every vine at waist height with hand tools and apply herbicide mix to bottom
section of vine.
x Allow cut vines to die off in tree canopy.
x Foliar spray rate: 100mL to 10L of water
x Cut and paint rate 1 part Glyphosate/Metsulfuron: 1 part water
x Herbicide group: B (sulfonylurea group)
x Resistance risk: High.
*Methodology is subject to refinement following monitoring of efficacy of initial treatment.
Method 2 - Mechanical removal and/or herbicide treatment of woody weeds (e.g.
Umbrella tree, Coccus palm)
x 2.5 tonne excavator with articulated grab to secure weed tree in grab before
chainsaw operator cuts trunk at ground level.
x Cut and paint woody weeds (e.g. Umbrella tree) with Glyphosate 360 g/L within 30
seconds of cutting trunk/stem. Application rate for cut stump with Glyphosate 360
g/L is 1 part per 1.5 parts of water.
x Use 2.5 tonne excavator with articulated grab to remove woody weed trees including
Frangipani vine intermingled with canopy foliage where access is possible, while
minimizing impacts on existing native vegetation.
x All woody weeds and dead vines to be put through chipper and stockpiled on site for
later use in landscaping or revegetation.
x Any weed seedlings around base of weed trees to be hand pulled if possible, or
chipped.
Method 3 – Manual removal (Mother of millions and Creeping inch plant)
x For small infestations, mother of millions can be removed manually.
x Loosen stems by pulling backwards and forwards, then pull out gently.
x Tap roots to dislodge excess soil.
x Relevel soil surface.
x Carefully dispose of removed plants. They can be burnt; stored in black plastic bags
until completely decayed; or buried; or taken to landfill.
