6.1.5 Car Wash Facility Demand
The ABS Motor Vehicle Census reports the number of motor vehicles registered in Australia several
sub-categories. The relevant categories for our assessment of car wash demand are passenger
vehicles, campervans and light commercial vehicles. In 2021 the size of the relevant vehicle fleet is
18,444,456 vehicles.
In 2021, IBISWorld reported that there were 2,259 car wash establishments in Australia, which
translates to an estimated 8,165 vehicles per establishment.
Table 6-8 denotes the estimated number of vehicles per establishment in 2021.

6.2 Car Wash Facility Demand
Based on the methodology discussed in the previous section, there is demand for 1.4 car wash
facilities in 2021, growing to demand for 1.6 car wash facilities by 2031.
Table 6-9 details demand for commercial car wash facilities within the combined trade area, based
on national provision ratios.
