Version 1
Hierarchy of Control (HOC): 1. Eliminate 2. Substitute 3. Isolate 4. Engineer 5. Admin 6. PPE
Maintain site entry point Illegally discharge sediment to 5 Washing/flushing of sealed roadways must only occur where Site Manager
stormwater drainage sweeping has failed to remove sufficient sediment and there is a
compelling need to remove the remaining sediment (e.g. for safety
reasons). In such circumstances, all reasonable and practicable
sediment control measures must be used to prevent, or at least
minimise, the release of sediment into receiving waters. Only those
measures that will not cause safety and property flooding issues shall
be employed. Sediment removed from roadways must be disposed
of in a lawful manner that does not cause ongoing soil erosion or
environmental harm
Discharge water after the rain Unauthorised sediment-laden water 5 Stop all pumping in the vicinity and notify your supervisor Site Manager
event discharge resulting in impact to Contain discharge where possible
waterways and possible
prosecution Only discharge if water has been tested and passed the criteria or it
must be treated.
Water quality does not meet 5 All water quality data, including dates of rainfall, dates of testing, HSE Advisor
discharge criteria testing results and dates of water release, must be kept in an on-site
register. The register is to be maintained up to date for the duration
of the approved works and be available on-site for inspection by
company environmental representative or regulator on request.
- pH is within 6.5-8.5
- Turbidity is <75NTU or TSS <50mg/L
Treat water with flocculating agents (e.g. Aluminium Sulfate, or
Gypsum. Note that Aluminium Sulfate will greatly decrease pH level
in the water. It must be used in the conjunction with Hydrated Lime to
balance out the pH)
Maintain sediment basin/tank (if Erosion and sediment control 5 Clean out accumulated sediment when it reaches the marker Site Manager
applicable) measures are not in good order and board/post, and restore the original storage volume.
not ready for the significant rain
events
Rehabilitation Environmental harm caused by 5 Exposed soil surfaces need to be stabilised as soon as practicable to Site Manager
erosion and soil loss prevent, or at least minimise potential environmental harm. Once
stabilised, these areas need to be revegetated or otherwise
rehabilitated to ensure appropriate long-term erosion control.
