Given the nature of the works there will be opportunities to utilise temporary erosion protection measures
during construction. Diversion bunds are to be stabilised with geotextile or soil binder and if temporary
erosion control is required in other areas, erosion control blankets (i.e. geotextile) or soil binder should be
applied to exposed surfaces, taking note of the maximum days to stabilisation and percentage cover to be
provided (as detailed in Table 2).

The temporary access tracks and vehicle manoeuvring areas will be stabilised using road base, thus
reducing the need for temporary erosion control during construction. Runoff from these areas must
however be directed to stable/lined drainage structures.

Once the excavations for the pool are undertaken, sediment control will be the dominant measure in
managing stormwater runoff until final treatments can be applied to the work area.

5.1. Stockpiles
Stockpiles formed and retained on site should be situated away from any drainage paths. Temporary
erosion protection for stockpiles must be provided in accordance with Table 2. Alternatively sediment
fence can be installed around the stockpiles. A diversion bund or other drainage control measures must be
installed around the upslope side of stockpiles.

6. Drainage Control
Drainage control considers three main principles; diverting external flow before it enters site, directing site
runoff to an appropriate sediment control, and ensuring runoff is conveyed in a non-erosive manner.
A key component of managing surface waters through and within the project site is the diversion of ‘clean’
runoff away from disturbed portions of the site. Clean water is defined as water that either enters the
property from an external catchment and has not been further contaminated by sediment within the site,
or water that has originated from the site and is of such quality that it does not need to be treated in order
to achieve the required water quality standard, or would not be further improved if it was to pass through
the sediment trap specified for the sub-catchment (IECA, 2008).
In diverting clean water around the disturbed portions of the site, it will remain separated from the
sediment laden runoff that is required to be treated within nominated sediment controls. It is important
that clean water diversion bunds are constructed prior to new areas being disturbed to reduce the
likelihood of runoff being contaminated.

‘Dirty’ water on the other hand is described as runoff from the construction site, or exposed footprint that
is not expected to meet the water quality objectives. Dirty water must be collected and directed to an
appropriately designed and installed sediment control. After passing through the appropriate sediment
control, the water may then be classified as clean water.
