Figure 1: Waste Hierarchy Decision Process
6.1. 1 Waste Prevention Principles
Waste prevention principles to be adopted:
When assessing design options, consideration shall be given to options that have higher waste reduction than
the alternatives (if economical to do so);
When assessing construction options, consideration shall be given to options that have higher waste reduction
than the alternatives (if economical to do so);
When purchasing for the project, consideration shall be given to either reduce or avoid the generation of waste;
and
Aim to accurately estimate and order quantities of materials required.
6.1. 2 Waste Reduce Principles
Waste reduction principles to be adopted:
Material substitution for a less resource intensive product or service (generation) and reduce waste (disposal)
Avoid disposable products (e.g. polystyrene cups) and buy bulk supplies.
Recycle aluminium, glass and plastic drink containers.
Avoid generating excess waste by using e-mail as much as possible, circulating one copy of a memo and have
people sign it after reading, and editing rough drafts on computer.
Reduce paper waste by photocopying double sided, printing double sided or using singled sided waste again as
notepaper or for drafts
Reuse old binders, file folders, report covers and general office equipment
6.1. 3 Waste Reuse Principles
Every effort will be made to ensure that waste material is seen as a resource and is used, either on-site within the project
or off-site either on other projects or by other persons. Waste reuse principles adopted are:
Identifying materials for a reuse purpose;
Segregated materials at the source of generation to facilitate reuse if economical to do so; and
Storing or reusing those items either on-site or off-site, during the process if economical to do so.
