Research Assistant, Kafue Conservation Project, Zambia – Game Rangers International
& Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA)

ƒ Volunteer placement for 3 weeks in the South Kafue National Park (KNP) in Zambia,
   working with a Wildlife Biologist from Australia (Dr Kerryn Carter) on the Kafue
   Conservation Program

ƒ Monitoring of wild elephant herds on an established 40 km linear transect (access track) in
   the south of KNP, collecting information on age/sex structures and identification of adult
   elephants (via ear nick database) to plot movements of individuals

ƒ Development of a Biodiversity Monitoring Program for KNP focusing on the use of
   Distance sampling methods to monitor ungulate populations in response to anti-poaching
   activities undertaken by ZAWA

ƒ Assistance in facilitating community meetings in areas surrounding KNP to discuss
   potential solutions for long-standing human-elephant conflicts (eg use of physical
   deterrents to prevent loss of crops, alternative harvesting methods and markets for
   products to reduce the overall risk of crop loss to elephants)
