7. DISCUSSION
7.1. Multiple Zones Hosting Entertainment at the Same Time
The source levels for the in-house distributed speaker systems presented in Table 5 were derived
based upon the assumption that entertainment will be played simultaneously in all of the internal
zones, with the assumption that each zone contributed equally to the noise emission level at the
receiver. This is a conservative assumption that will not occur in practice.
Consolidating the limits as recommended in Table 6 will lower the overall noise emission level of
the internal in-house distributed speaker systems. As a result, if entertainment is played
simultaneously inside and outside of the venue using the in-house distributed speaker systems or
stand-alone systems, there would be no need to reduce the source levels of those systems1.
7.2. Source Levels for Different Types of Entertainment
To give some guidance to Management as to the types of entertainment which would generally
comply with the source levels established in Section 6, the typical levels generated by common
forms of entertainment are summarised in Table 7.
Table 7: Typical source levels for different forms of amplified entertainment
Source Level
Form of Entertainment
(dBC @ 3m)
Small rock band 105 – 120
DJ/karaoke 95 – 115
Other small band 95 – 110
Soloist or duo with pre-recorded backing 90 – 105
Video disc 80 – 95
Other piped music 70 – 80
It can be seen in Table 7 that the derived limits for the stand-alone systems will allow up to a small
rock band when all doors and windows are closed. With doors or windows open, the source levels
would allow for a soloist or duo.
7.3. Checking Source Levels
In the absence of a sound limiter or similar, Management will need to conduct regular checks of the
source noise levels to ensure that the derived emission limits are not exceeded. Exceedances
frequently occur for amplified entertainment due to threshold shifts in the performers’ ears
1 It is extremely unlikely that the Surf Club will simultaneously host two stand-alone systems at the same time, as the music noise would interfere
with each other. In that unlikely scenario, the source levels for both stand-alone systems would need to be reduced by 3dBC.
