EXAMPLES OF CORRECT SIGNAGE MOUNTING
FOR SIGNAGE PLACEMENT, LONG TERM
GENERALLY MEANS LONGER THAN TWO WEEKS.
LONG TERM PLACEMENT ON POSTS
• ON KERBED ROADS IN BUILT UP AREAS ADJACENT TO FOOTPATHS
OR WHERE VEHICLE PARKING MAY OCCUR, THEY SHOULD BE
ERECTED A MINIMUM OF 2.2m MIN FROM LEVEL OF KERB OR
FOOTPATH TO UNDERSIDE OF SIGN.
• SIGNS SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT THEY ARE PROMINENTLY
DISPLAYED TO TRAFFIC AND WILL COMMAND ATTENTION.
• SIGNS SHOULD BE PLACED AT LEAST 2m CLEAR OF THE TRAVELLED
PATH WHERE PRACTICABLE.
LONG TERM PLACEMENT ON POSTS
• WHERE NEITHER PEDESTRIANS OR PARKED VEHICLES HAVE TO BE
CONSIDERED, A MOUNTING HEIGHT OF 1.5m MIN FROM LEVEL OF
SHOULDER SURFACE TO UNDERSIDE OF SIGN MAY BE MORE
APPROPRIATE, E.G MEDIANS, ISLANDS, OPEN ROAD AREAS ETC.
• SIGNS SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT THEY ARE PROMINENTLY
DISPLAYED TO TRAFFIC AND WILL COMMAND ATTENTION.
• SIGNS SHOULD BE PLACED AT LEAST 2m CLEAR OF THE TRAVELLED
PATH WHERE PRACTICABLE.
SHORT TERM PLACEMENT OF SIGNS
• SIGNS MOUNTED ON PORTABLE SUPPORTS (LEGS) SHOULD BE A
MINIMUM HEIGHT OF 200mm FROM THE SHOULDER SURFACE TO
THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE SIGN.
• SHORT TERM SIGNS SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT THEY ARE
PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED TO TRAFFIC AND WILL COMMAND
ATTENTION.
• IN BUILT UP AREAS, SIGNS SHOULD BE PLACED BEHIND THE KERB
IF VISIBLE TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IF SIGNS HAVE TO BE PLACED
ON THE PAVEMENT, THEY SHOULD BE PLACED AS NEAR AS
PRACTICABLE TO THE KERB WITHOUT BECOMING OBSCURED OR
OBSTRUCTING MOVING TRAFFIC.
• SIGNS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE PLACED IN OR OBSTRUCT
BICYCLE LANES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
• IF SIGNS ARE PLACED ADJACENT TO OR PARTLY ON A FOOTPATH,
A TRAFFIC CONE OR BOLLARD SHOULD BE PLACED AGAINST THE
SIGN TO WARN PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS OF ITS PRESENCE.
• SIGNS MAY NEED TO BE WEIGHTED DOWN WITH SAND BAGS IN
WINDY CONDITIONS OR OVERNIGHT TO ENSURE STABILITY.
Note: In all cases,
1. Traffic Management signage may only be placed in position by a person who holds a Traffic Management
Implementation (TMI) qualification.
2. Implementation of signs should be done in accordance with a Traffic Guidance Scheme designed by a Traffic
Management Design qualified person.
3. Any changes to a Traffic Guidance Scheme may only be authorised by a Traffic Management Design qualified
person.

GENERAL TRAFFIC GUIDANCE SCHEME NOTES
1. Traffic Guidance Schemes attached herewith have been drawn based on the principles of the current issue of the MUTCD Pt. 3 "Works on Roads” (November 2019).
2. All signage to be placed, based on an onsite risk assessment in accordance with clause 2.2.3 of the MUTCD Part 3, at the time of installation.
3. The Principal Contractor (PC) / PCBU is responsible for ensuring all works are conducted in accordance with relevant legislation.
4. A site pre-start should be undertaken prior to starting to ensure consultation with all workers understand the work activities and details of the TGS.
5. Signs and devices shall be set out and placed by a Traffic Management Implementation (TMI) qualified person.
6. Setting out of signs and devices should be done in the following sequence and removed in reverse order (Clause 2.5.3):
a) Advanced warning and regulatory signs (including temporary speed zone signs)
b) All intermediate advance warning and regulatory signs and devices required in advance of the taper or start of work area.
c) All delineating devices required to form taper including the illuminated flashing arrow sign at the end of the taper where required.
d) Delineation of the work area or side-track.
e) All other required warning and regulatory signs including termination and end of temporary speed zone signs.
7. It is the responsibility of the Principal Contractor (PC) / PCBU, to ensure, all signage is checked regularly, once installed. (Appendix A-A2)
8. Due consideration is to be to be given to all road users at all times, including but not limited to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
9. Signs that are inappropriate to, or conflict with, the worksite situation shall be covered or removed. This might include conflicting speed signs during working hours,
or “Workman” symbolic and/or Traffic Controller Ahead signs when workers are not present, or Traffic Controllers are not operating.
10. Signage and devices to not be placed as to obstruct vehicles or pedestrians (usually 1m from any running lane), but clause 4.13.4 of the MUTCD should be observed
in all situations.
11. Changes to the signage arrangements, as documented here, are to be recorded as per the requirements of the MUTCD Pt. 3 Clause 2.6.2
12. Placement of signage will need to consider any existing signage and other obstacles such as buildings, street furniture and vegetation at the location.
13. Signage / device placement must be assessed on site and adjusted within tolerances allowed if necessary. (Clause 4.1.6).
14. Where no distance for sign placement are given, a literal interpretation is required, based on an onsite risk assessment.
15. Diagrams drawn are not to scale and locations shown are indicative only.
13. Short term signage (usually up to 2 weeks) may be mounted at a minimum of 200mm above road / kerb surface level.
Long term signage should be mounted on fixed supports (posts). On kerbed roads in built-up areas where signs are mounted on posts adjacent to a footpath, or
where vehicle parking may occur, they should be erected a minimum of 2.2 m above the level of the kerb or footpath to the underside of the sign, to reduce
interference from parked vehicles. Where neither pedestrians nor parked vehicles have to be considered, for example, on a traffic island or median, a mounting
height of 1.5 m may be more appropriate. (See clause 2.5.2 of MUTCD).
14. Minimum lane widths in accordance with table 4.11 and edge clearances will be maintained at all times.
15. Cone or bollard spacing should be done in accordance with table 3.7 of the MUTCD.
16. Where signage cannot be placed on the left side of the road as indicated in the diagrams, it may be placed on the right-hand side (or median).
17. Plant, vehicles and materials are not to be stored in positions where they may create a hazard, obscure signage or block the line of sight for approaching drivers /
cyclists.
18. Any changes to the TGS (Outside the scope of TMI Table 1.4.31 Supplement MUTCD Part 3) shall be reported to a TMD officer for approval prior to changes being made.
19. Clearances for excavation works adjacent to running lane to be delineated in accordance with table E1 in the MUTCD Part 3.
20. All incidents/ accidents within the site area to be dealt with in accordance with the site safety plan.
Notes below on Traffic Controllers apply when Traffic Controllers have been contracted:
21. Traffic Controllers must conduct their operational procedures in accordance with the TCASAP.
22. Traffic Controllers must be clothed in accordance with the DTMR – Queensland Traffic Controller Clothing Standard.
23. Traffic Controllers shall be relieved from their duty after not more than 2 hours for a period of rest or other duties of at least 15 minutes (TCASAP).
24. Traffic Controllers should always have an escape route to a safe location established prior to starting work.
25. Traffic controllers should follow the guidelines for daily routines (Appendices A2 & A3 of MUTCD Part 3).
