Environmental Noise Level Impact Assessment of Proposed Refurbished and Extended

AMBIENT NOISE LEVELS, MONITORING LOCATION A
Table 1 details the range and average ambient noise levels at Monitoring Location A (north of the
Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club at Costa Nova, 1 Belmore Terrace, Sunshine Beach). This
monitoring location was on the south/south-east facing balcony of Unit 5, with direct line of sight to the
Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club, first floor level of Costa Nova, with the microphone elevated 1.6
metres above balcony level. The results of this ambient noise assessment would be representative of
the ambient noise levels at the residential to the north and west of the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving
Club.
For details of measurement equipment, equipment settings, monitoring location and atmospheric
conditions for the weekdays and weekend, refer Appendix A, whilst Appendix B details all of the key
parameter results of the ambient noise level measurements.
With respect to noise the following should be noted:
• daytime: 0700 to 1800 hours;
• evening: 1800 to 2200 hours;
• night-time: 2200 to 0700 hours;
• ‘A’ weighted: adjustment made by the sound level meter to the measured noise to
correspond to the response of the human ear. This adjustment is
standardised by international noise standards;
• LAeq,T: the equivalent continuous (or approximately the ‘average’) ‘A’ weighted sound
pressure level for the measurement period ‘T’;
• LA1,T: the ‘A’ weighted sound pressure level exceeded for 1% of the measurement
period ‘T’;
• LA10,T: the ‘A’ weighted sound pressure level exceeded for 10% of the measurement
period ‘T’, which is an approximation of the ‘average of the maximum noise
levels’;
• LA90,T: the ‘A’ weighted sound pressure level exceeded for 90% of the measurement
period ‘T’, which is an approximation of the ‘average of the minimum noise
levels’, which is also known as the ‘background’ noise level.
