Appendix C Field Survey Form
Hard infrastructure (mainly for high risk major or connecting roads);
• Is there any existing infrastructure to retrofit
o Existing Culvert, bridge, overpass
▪ what is the diameter/height (is it >1200?), possibility of adding ledge, koala post and rail, refuge
poles etc.).
▪ Can you install koala fence to guide to structures
▪ Amount of light/openness
▪ Ability to view habitat on other side
▪ Features of passage approach (koala trees, refuge poles)
▪ Water level
▪ Median strip, dual carriage way?
▪ Condition (weeds, blockage, etc.) (possibility of weed control, plantings etc.)
o Bridge (overpass or underpass)
▪ Are there public footpaths underneath (or public access which may impact upon gates for
fencing or safety issues)
▪ Angle of bridge abutment to determine dry ledge design (timber or concrete/gravel etc.)
▪ Features of passage approach (koala trees, refuge poles)
▪ Median strip dual carriage way
▪ Condition (weeds, blockage, etc.) (possibility of weed mgmt., plantings etc.)
o Passageway
▪ How high? Is there enough room (1.2m?)
▪ Surface type
o Fencing (koala fence, or other fencing) to guide koalas to structures (pipes/culverts/bridges)
▪ If new are there restrictions i.e.
o what are the potential gaps (i.e. driveways, public access etc.)?
o What is the tenure for potential returns (reserve or private).
o How far is vegetation from roadside (>30m? from veg)
o How long can the fence be?
o If existing fencing what is its condition i.e. weeds, vegetation overhangs, vines,
blockages, gaps in fencing etc.
o Are there any barriers to movement (rock walls, fencing, weeds etc.) (possibility of adding climbing poles,
lattice etc.)
Soft measures (major roads that cannot be retrofitted or high risk local roads)
• What is the speed limit? (possibility of reducing speed limit)
• Existing koala signage (possibility of adding signage – maybe different colours/stands out, reflective etc.)
• Slow down devices (humps, rumple strips) or speed restrictions, cameras etc. (possibility of adding speed
restrictions, or permanent speed cameras at critical sites where fauna exclusion is not suitable)
• Lighting? (if no, possibility of street lighting or solar if rural, potential for car activated lighting certain times of the
year)
• Vegetation and peripheral view?
