Each wheelchair space shall be filled by deployable seats in order to maximise seating
capacity when wheelchairs are not being carried. Deployable seats shall return automatically
to the folded position when not in use.
The seats shall have full size cushions and squabs and when in pairs should comfortably
accommodate two 90 kilogram adults sitting side by side. The cushions and squabs shall be
easily removable for repair and replacement.
The seat backs shall be of stainless steel or other suitable material to prevent vandalism and
to facilitate easy cleaning.
Priority seating shall be provided within easy access of the front door and shall be identified
by contrasting colours as priority seating positions for disabled and elderly passengers. Seat
fabric is to be DDA compliant.
A moulded padded grab rail shall be fitted to the top of each seat back (except for the
rearmost row of seats).
Passenger Seat trim:
Colours and patterns of materials covering the seats must be uniform throughout the bus and
incorporate a seat fabric pattern design that camouflages stains and other markings.
Hand Rails and Stanchions:
Handrails and stanchions shall be ergonomically designed and installed to provide ready
hand holds for all standing passengers and for passengers boarding and alighting. Interior
poles are to be yellow and reflective to ensure contrast and DDA compliance.
Yellow and reflective coloured grab rails and mounting brackets shall be fitted to doorways.
Rivets shall not be used to secure grab rails to their respective brackets and particular care
shall be taken to ensure that there are no sharp edges or protrusions, which might cause
injuries to passengers.
Suitable transverse handrails, adequately padded, shall be provided on each bulkhead or
screen ahead of any forward facing seats.
Bus Stop Bell and Sign:
Provision shall be made for passengers to notify the driver by both visual and audible means
that they wish to alight. This should be via next stop audible bells and an illuminated next
stop sign fitted at the front interior of the bus that is easily accessible and visible to
passengers.
Push button assemblies shall be mounted 1 470 mm above floor level, and positioned within
1.5 m of any passenger, on the handrail stanchions. Wheelchair locations in the bus shall be
provided with low height push button bell controls.
Operation of any bell push shall activate an audible and visual warning for the driver, and
shall cause two signs with the wording 'Stopping' (non-flashing), to illuminate until the doors
are opened. One sign shall be mounted near ceiling height adjacent to the front door and one
adjacent to the centre door for viewing by disabled patrons.
The sign shall be switched off whenever either door is opened and closed. A single stroke
bell or chime shall be supplied and mounted in the front header compartment in a readily
accessible position.
