NOOSA SHORT STAY ACCOMMODATION ECONOMIC & SOCIAL ASSESSMENT
While the number of nights in paid accommodation in Noosa remains below pre-COVID-19 levels (Figure 2.3),
nights stayed in rented houses, units or apartments reached record highs in the December quarter 2021 and March
quarter 2022, at more than 450,000 nights in each quarter (Figure 2.4). This is counter to the experience in SEQ,
which remains well below pre-COVID-19 levels.

Noosa Total SEQ Total
Source: TRA (2022).
The share of visitor nights in paid accommodation comprised by rented houses, units or apartments has typically
been in the 30%-40% range in Noosa up to early 2020, although there has been some volatility quarter to quarter
varying as high as around 60% and as low as around 10% (Figure 2.5). The sharp increase in nights stayed in
rented houses, units or apartments in Noosa in the December quarter 2021 and March quarter 2022 saw the share
of paid accommodation increase to 60% and 55%, respectively, in those quarters.
By comparison, the share of visitor nights paid accommodation comprised by rented houses, units or apartments
in SEQ has typically been in the 40%-55% range, with few quarters outside this range (and generally not far outside
this range). Between the June quarter 2020 and March quarter 2022, the share of visitor nights paid
accommodation comprised by rented houses, units or apartments in SEQ dipped to between 20% and 30%, and
only returned to 40% in the June quarter 2022.
It is evident that the Noosa tourism market experience has been much more positive than the SEQ tourism market
experience following COVID-19 over the past two years since the adoption of the NP2020.
