The summary provided within Table 1-2 indicates that RE12.2.14 is a form of vegetation that:
a) does not support a particularly high diversity of fauna species in general; and
b) is of relatively low importance in terms of providing habitat resources for the diversity of rare,
threatened or otherwise significant fauna species that are known to occur in the Noosa Shire.
In this respect it is also noted that areas of RE12.2.14 within the Site are even less likely to be utilised by full
range of fauna species typically associated with RE12.2.14 due to:
a) the impacts of the historic and existing use of the Site for residential purposes; and
b) the proximity of the Site to a major roadway (i.e. David Low Way) and residential development to the
west.
The Fauna and Its Associated Biodiversity Values in Noosa Shire does not identify the specific fauna species
that are associated with particular RE types, apart from in Table 3.7 which identifies the link between particular
RE types and species with “specialised or restricted habitat associations”. The particular fauna species that
are identified in Table 3.7 as being associated with RE12.2.14 are:
Beach Stone- curlew (Esacus neglectus);
Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris);
Little Tern (Sterna albifrons); and
Ground Parrot (Pezoporus wallicus).
As detailed in the Ecological Assessment Report (Cardno, 8 August 2017) submitted in support of Application
only one of these species, the Ground Parrot (Pezoporus wallicus), has been recorded within a 2 km radius
of the Site. The preferred habitat type for this species in SEQ is described in the Commonwealth Department
of Environment and Energy SPRAT Profile as being comprised of “closed, subtropical graminoid heathlands
(consisting of grass-trees, with a high diversity of sedges, rushes and low shrubs), either moist or dry (Higgins
1999;McFarland 2005, pers. comm.). Within heathlands, dry habitats are used from mid autumn to late spring,
and wet habitats at other times. It is sometimes found in open Banksia woodlands with a heath understorey,
in closed fernland around shallow creeks on plains, or in sedges at swamp margins (Higgins 1999).” The Site
does not contain these forms of habitat and extensive areas of such habitat are located within the adjacent
sectors of Noosa National Park to the west of the Site and David Low Way. Whilst the other three species
may occasionally be encountered along the adjacent shoreline, the Site does not provide habitat resources
that are likely to be utilised by these speces.
