While Queensland is aging, Noosa is aging at a faster rate and at 45.9 (in 2011) Noosa’s
median age is higher than that for either SEQ or the State. Locally the highest median age
was 54.0 at Noosa North Shore followed by Noosa Heads at 50.0 years. Even the lowest
median age at 42.3 for Sunshine Beach to Peregian Beach was higher than Queensland’s at
36.0 or SEQ’s at 38.1 years.
Figure 2 below shows that since 1991, the Shire has seen a significant increase in the
proportion of residents aged 45 years and over. Residents aged 45 years and over
accounted for 50.9% of the population in 2011.
The proportion of residents aged 65 years and over has grown from 16.5% of the Shire’s
population in 1991 to 19.3% in 2011. Looking forward 1, almost a third of all residents in the
Shire are projected to be aged 65 years and over by 2036. The proportion of residents aged
85 years and over rose from 0.9% in 1991 to 2.2% in 2011 and is forecast to be 5.5% by
2036.
Since 1991, both the number and proportion of the Shire’s residents aged between 25 and
34 years has decreased.
