SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 DECEMBER 2017
Figure 2 – Foreshore Pop-Up Public Consultation Event
The consultation was publicised through local media, Council web pages and social media and
achieved good community traction, with over 18,000 views of the project video and a total reach
of Facebook posts of 55,471 people. These figures are the highest achieved by a Council project
to date and suggest the foreshore is a favourite area of many residents. Community participation
in the consultation was excellent with 1,008 surveys submitted, 320 attendees at pop-up events
and stakeholder workshops well attended.
Place Design Group’s Initial Consultation Summary report can be accessed at:
https://yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au/25814/documents/58978. The report outlines quantitative and
qualitative findings, including:
Demographics;
Visitation frequency;
Transport modes;
Use habits; and
Views and opinions on foreshore uses.
The strongest consultation feedback related to protecting the foreshore’s public open spaces and
included:
94% support for the vision “The foreshore should be peaceful, relaxing open space where I
can enjoy the river”.
92% support for the vision “The foreshore should be a family friendly park where children play
and parents can chat”.
There were mixed views on some issues, such as creating a dog off-leash area and the need for
more events, things to do and activation of spaces.
There was reasonably strong opposition to increasing the commerciality of the foreshore, such as
expansion of existing commercial premises, addition of more retail businesses, construction of a
dedicated wedding chapel or allowing more fitness trainers.
Whilst the project is focussed on use of the foreshore rather than infrastructure, members of the
public inevitably raised infrastructure issues such as pathway standards and the need for more
toilets. Infrastructure issues identified during the project are proposed to be separately identified
and further investigated where appropriate.
