Attachment 7C - Flora and Fauna Survey Assessment_Noosa Landfill - Revision 3
Native Foresters
With respect to opportunistic observations for non-target species (i.e. those not expected to
be affected by hydrological changes), the possibility exists that certain species may not
have been detected during field investigations due to:
seasonal inactivity during field survey;
species present within microhabitats not surveyed;
species that occur at very low abundance or in very small populations;
cryptic species able to avoid detection;
transient wide-ranging species not present during survey period;
absence of reproductive material for flora identification; or
drought induced leaf fall or senescence.
The precautionary principle was applied in estimating the likelihood of Commonwealth and
State listed species based on habitats identified within the subject site.
The 2019 Remnant Regional Ecosystem maps and data are based on extensive field
survey, analysis of aerial photographs, satellite imagery and detailed site data, and
assessment of other data such as geology and soil mapping and historical survey plans.
The positional accuracy of regional ecosystem data, mapped at a scale of 1:100,000, is 100
metres. The map scale of 1:50,000 applies to the Wet Tropics and part of Southeastern
Queensland and map amendments areas. The map scale of 1:25,000 applies to the
Brisbane City Council area within Southeastern Queensland. As a result there may be
anomalies between the mapped extent and groundtruthed extent of regional ecosystems
and landzones within the potential Impact Area.
The comments regarding site hydrology contained within this report are derived from field-
based observations and surface water quality monitoring at a limited number of sampling
sites. To better understand the hydro-geology of the Noosa landfill and adjacent vegetation
communities and groundwater dependent ecosystems, further information from a suitably
qualified hydro-geologist on the following is required:
i. The soil profile east of the developed Landfill areas, including the presence
and depth of indurated material retarding the movement of water down through
the soil;
ii. The relationship between ground water and surface water expression from
shallow groundwater wells.
A number of factors including pre-disturbance condition would need to be considered in
order to quantify the role that landfill-derived surface runoff has played since its construction
in 1988. Other considerations include: frequency of events that exceed the water-holding
capacity of the retention basins and the relative contributions from surrounding catchments.
