EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Not applicable.

RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Project Officer to the Infrastructure & Services Committee
Meeting dated 11 November 2014 and resolve to rename the section of David Low Way from the
intersection of Noosa Drive to the commencement of Edwards Street as Sunshine Beach Road.

REPORT
1. Background

Since the development of the Sunshine Beach estate in the 1920’s the road through what is now
known as Noosa Junction was referred to as Sunshine Beach Road. Over the following
decades, further development at Peregian Beach and Marcus Beach completed the road linking
these estates with this road in Noosa Heads. At that time, the road from Noosa Heads to the
Shire border was variously known as the Scenic Highway, Noosa Coastal Highway, Noosa
Coolum Highway and Noosa Caloundra Road.

In 1974, Noosa Council resolved to name the road David Low Highway to honour the former MLA
David Low. External agencies such as Australia Post, Telecom, SEQEB, Ambulance, Fire
Brigade etc. were notified of the name change. In 1994, Council resolved to change the name to
David Low Way. Refer to Attachment 1 – map.

2. The Case for Renaming

Regardless of the resolution by Council, the name Sunshine Beach Road continues to be used
colloquially as the predominant name today, and there are many examples where the preferential
use in the community and by business is Sunshine Beach Road. Such examples include:

 Signage: The new streetscaping works completed by Council just over 12 months ago
includes multiple instances of way-finding signage for pedestrians and cyclists that reference
the name Sunshine Beach Road. In addition, Telstra, Translink and most businesses have
   signage indicating Sunshine Beach Road.

 Australia Post: The Delivery Manager from Australia Post’s mail sorting centre in Noosaville
advises that their mail sorting system is unable to accommodate a road with two
simultaneous names. Australia Post has this road in their system as Sunshine Beach Road
and to their knowledge it has never been in their system as David Low Way. Mail addressed
to David Low Way, Noosa Heads, is currently returned to sender.
