REPORT
Background
The Cooroy Memorial Hall (the Hall) was opened in 1926. It was conceived as a new community
hall to serve the District’s growing population and as a permanent memorial to those servicemen
from the town who had lost their lives in World War 1.
For many decades the Hall was a community hub and was used for Anzac services, showing
movies, dances and balls, wedding receptions, church services, speech nights, public meetings
club and other activities.
The Cooroy Memorial Hall has heritage values and is included in the Maple St Character Area of
the Noosa Planning scheme.
A number of structural modifications were made to the Hall in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Hall was re-roofed in 1991 and repainted in 2000. However in the years after 2010 the then
Trustees of the Hall, the Cooroy RSL, found it increasingly difficult allocate adequate funds to
maintain the Hall and in November 2015, the Trustees closed the hall due to safety concerns.
Independent Building Inspections Report
Following an approach by the Trustees for Council to take over the Hall and in order to
understand the seriousness of the safety issues and the condition of the building, Council
commissioned a detailed building report on the Hall in September 2016 from consultants
‘Independent Building Inspections’.
