6.8.2 Innovation Zone Code
6.8.2.1 Application
This code applies to:
(a) assessable development on land within the Innovation zone as identified on the zoning maps contained within
Schedule 2 (Mapping); and
(b) acceptable development subject to requirements and identified as requiring assessment against the Innovation zone
code by the tables of assessment in Part 5 (Tables of assessment).
6.8.2.2 Purpose and overall outcomes
(1) The purpose of the Innovation zone is to—
(a) identify land suitable for new and emerging uses and activities to provide opportunities for innovation and
creativity; and
(b) facilitate new and emerging uses and activities that cannot readily be provided for in other parts of the local
government area; and
(c) provide for uses and activities that promote knowledge creation and entrepreneurship in industry, research and
development, science and technology.
(2) The overall outcomes sought for the Innovation zone are as follows:
(a) Uses are facilitated that promote knowledge creation, education and entrepreneurial activity that diversify our
economy in areas of science and technology, research and development and other innovative activities. Such
industries are creators and early adaptors of technology and continually develop new and innovative ways to
evolve.
(b) Development includes advanced manufacturing technologies, servicing or research and analysis related to
industries to enhance the local and regional economy including one or more of the following:
(i) Creative industry;
(ii) Digital economy;
(iii) Knowledge industry;
(iv) Emerging technology; and
(v) Environmental research industry.
(c) The Innovation zone promotes colocation and industry clusters where possible to allow for flexible and shared
workspaces and sharing of resources to foster collaboration and future growth of like minded innovation sectors.
(d) Retaining development capacity for innovative uses into the future to ensure future upscaling and growth
opportunities are realised as well as providing for future development of new or emerging innovative sectors as
they develop.
(e) Development for land uses or activities that would reasonably be expected to be accommodated in a centre,
industry or any other land use zones across the Shire should not be located in the Innovation Zone.
(f) Caretaker's accommodation:
(i) occurs only where directly associated with a nonresidential use on the site/tenancy, is ancillary to the
primary nonresidential use and there is a demonstrated ongoing operational need for fulltime
caretaking;
(ii) is a smallscale component of the building or premises, subsidiary in size, form and function to the
principal nonresidential use of the premises; and
(iii) is occupied by direct employees of the principal nonresidential use of the premises;
(g) Development displays a high standard of amenity in terms of built form, scale, character and landscape design
