Fire Safety Strategy – Bushfire Fire Spread Prevention 100 Cooyar Street, Noosa Heads QLD 4567 Figure 6 Bushfire Intensity Contour Diagram 2.3 Assessment of RACF Bushfire Spread Potential Referring to the contour results identified in the figures above, it is apparent that the portion of the building to the southeast and east of the site receives a potential radiant heat of greater than 10 kW/m2. In terms of what these values mean in terms of the potential for fire spread to occur, the Guide to the BCA provides some guidance on the critical heat flux required to cause ignition of certain combustible materials. These values are provided below. Timber: ▪ Ignition in the absence of a spark 35 kW/m2 ▪ Ignition in the presence of a spark 20 kW/m2 Curtain Materials ▪ Ignition in the absence of a spark 20 kW/m2 ▪ Ignition in the presence of a spark 10 kW/m2 If we apply this rudimentary logic to the building, we can determine recommendations to limit the potential for bushfire fire spread to occur to the aged care building.
