Fire Safety Strategy – Bushfire Fire Spread Prevention 100 Cooyar Street, Noosa Heads QLD 4567 It is noted in this report that the building receives a concession by the BCA to be construct from Type C construction however given the potential radiant heat exposure to the building is it recommended that the new works achieve the minimum requirements for Type B construction, all external walls are required to be of non-combustible construction in accordance with BCA Clause C1.9 and Specification C1.1. As such all external walls, including the roof and eaves are to be non-combustible. And therefore the only remaining path of fire spread to occur from a bushfire includes windows. This logic of limiting the potential for fire spread to occur is consistent with the construction recommendations provided by AS 3959, whereby external building finishes are of non-combustible construction and ember attack is considered through application of specific measures to the windows and doors, i.e. paths whereby airborne embers could enter the building. As such it is recommended that all openings along the eastern and southern elevations of then building, i.e. windows are provided with shielding against ember attack. Recommendations also include the provision of self-closing doors and not providing any curtain type materials to unprotected openings. It is also recommended that combustible sunshades are not provided / fixed to the building serving any outdoor areas along these elevations. Referring to the figures below, all areas highlighted in orange areas potentially received a RHF above 10 kW/m2 and therefore potentially exposed to a radiant heat sufficient to cause ignition of curtain type materials when exposed to a spark, i.e. thermally thin cellulosic type materials exposed to pilot ignition. This characteristic of ignition is also consistent with the BAL ratings as described for BAL 12.5 whereby a BAL 12.5 is exposed to ember attack. As such recommendations are provided on this basis.
