3           Air Emission Data Data
3.1         Service Station Air Emission
3.1.1       Potential Air Emission Sources
Air emissions from the proposed service station are expected to occur from a number of different
sources and activities. These include:

⚫ refuelling areas (during filling of cars, and ‘whoosh’ emissions during removal of fuel cap on
    vehicle);

⚫ tank breathing from underground tanks via the vent pipes;
⚫ bulk filling of underground tanks (emissions occur when vapour in the head space is displaced as
    tank filling occurs); and

⚫ other fugitive emissions such as spillage.
The key air quality indicators associated with the above sources are general odour and Volatile
Organic Compounds (VOCs) which include compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene,
cyclohexane, n-hexane and ethylbenzene. Exposure to elevated concentrations of VOCs are related
to health and nuisance odour impacts.

In relation to bulk filling, when a vapour return system is used on the road tanker to return vapours
to the tanker rather than allowing them to be emitted to the atmosphere, emissions can be reduced
substantially (in the order of 95%). This type of mitigation is called Phase 1 vapour recovery. Phase 1
vapour recovery is proposed to be installed at the site. Phase 2 vapour recovery, which reduces
emissions during vehicle refuelling, is also proposed to be installed at the site.

Table 3.1 presents a summary of the proposed service station operating data. Figure 4.5 in Section
4.4 presents the location of the air emission sources.
