The application fails to recognise or address the changes
to retail shopping patterns such as the rise of on-line
shopping which has significantly impacted on the retail
sales.
Maroochydore is half hour away and gives access to an
immense range of retailing. We don’t want a Maroochy
identity.
The USA has a large and growing number of totally vacant
and derelict shopping malls. They are becoming ruins and
housing criminal activity – this growing overseas trend must
be considered.
Many design professionals now question the relevance of
the shopping centre model with predictions over time that
they will become retail slums full of discount variety stores.
Is this the future for Noosa?
Not supported by the wider Noosa business community.
Noosa Civic, [Noosa Homemaker Centre] and Officeworks
struggled to find long term tenants for all of its retail space
and had to fill up the shortfall with a gym. Why would we be
convinced that the retail space will be fully tenanted to retail
operations?
Noosa residents embrace the concepts of weekly food
shopping as the farmers markets in addition to our
adequately stocked and staffed current supermarkets. They
do not embrace the suburban shopping mall mentality.
Expansion of the Civic would be detrimental to the present
areas of Tewantin, Noosaville and Noosa Junction. 3
supermarkets at the Civic are too many.
Variety of small retail shops and Coles and Target Country
already in the Junction.
A diversified range of retail precincts in close proximity to
where people live and stay is of more benefit to Noosa than
a large, outmoded retail centre.
It is a generally acknowledged economic fact that times are
going to get tougher in Australia and discretionary retail
spending will be hard hit by any economic slowdown, so to
be expanding the regional retail capacity of Noosa, which is
already oversupplied, is wrong and foolhardy and if
approved, would lack foresight by the approving authority.
Noosa Junction is preferred for shopping centre
development as it is more balanced with a range of
restaurants, a cinema and shopping outlets. It is used both
by day and in the evening.
Crazy to try to make all the centres the major one. So many
shops are the same as other centres, we don’t need
replicas.
