Figure 7: Flood Barrier

The barrier is used to lift the site level above the defined flood level. The barrier activates without human
intervention and is a self-contained system without remote service pits. Floodwater is intercepted by surface
grates and collected in an underground chamber as illustrated in Figure 7 below. As the chamber fills with
water a buoyant barrier raises to the surface. Additionally, the narrow footprint avoids conflicts with
underground services
The barrier will be installed at the top for the ramp adjacent to the property boundary and between the
perimeter retaining walls. The barrier does not require power or human intervention. Further details regarding
the proposed flood barrier and its location are provided in drawings DA.01 and DA.06 within Appendix A.
The proposed flood barrier results in a development that makes a positive statement and contribution to
streetscape. It is a sound design outcome which addresses the potential risks of flooding and enhances the
pedestrian’s experience. The barrier does not negatively impact upon the visual amenity of the site as
demonstrated by neighbouring uses and their compromised design outcomes (Photograph 4).
