3.2 SUNSHINE COAST & NOOSA MARKET
The Sunshine Coast and Noosa Shire cater to several distinct tourism and visitor markets. Whilst
these markets have differences, they also share numerous commonalities which define the
provision of accommodation within the Region including:
Primarily domestic visitation;
Family holiday destinations;
Natural attractions such as beaches, the hinterland, national parks and waterways.
Limited investment into visitor accommodation facilities over the past decade across the
Sunshine Coast Tourism Region (SCTR) (FIGURE 3.1) has however seen the Region’s ‘star fade’ as
a tourism destination. The key visitor accommodation markets within the Region are
Noosa/Noosa Heads and Mooloolaba which include the greatest quantity and diversity of
facilities.
Short-term accommodation facilities are dominated by serviced apartments within the SCTR. The
ABS Survey of Tourist Accommodation indicates that as at the June Quarter 2016, serviced
apartments comprised 67.2% of the available short-term accommodation rooms on the Sunshine
Coast. By comparison, serviced apartments made up 40.1% of Brisbane and 39.4% of the Gold
Coast Tourism Region’s offering.
