5.1 SUMMARY TREE TABLE
DSH NRZ SRZ
ID Common Name Age Class Height (m)
(mm) (m) (m)
Tr1 Pink Bloodwood Maturing 12-14 400-500 5.4 2.47
Tr2 Pink Bloodwood Mature 14-16 600-700 7.8 2.85
Tr3 Stringy Bark Euc. Mature 16-18 700-800 9 3.1
Please note that the height and trunk diameters (DSH – Diameter at Standard Height) are
estimated by eye, to guide the calculation for the Structural Root Zone (SRZ) and Notional
Root Zone (NRZ). As these trees were retained within a suburban public road setting, they
have a formed and restrictive kerb and road on one side of Trees Tr2 and TR3; they have had
SRZ intrusion in the past decades. The trees have adapted to the verge configuration and
survived the transition from native bush trees to a suburban streetscape.
5.2 TREE REVIEW
The suburb of Tewantin has seen significant expansion over the past 60-70 years. It’s
estimated that this section of Gympie Street was developed approximately 40 years ago, when
a number of mature Eucalypt trees in the road verges were retained, including trees Tr2 and
Tr3. They were likely retained to maintain the leafy-green feel to the new suburban
development at the time. Tr1 appears to be a younger tree and was more likely allowed to
grow up in the verge next to the boundary vegetation over the past 20–30 years.
The project intends to similarly retain these trees whilst adhering to mandatory planning
conditions. The relevant Noosa council planning conditions relate to standardised driveway
designs and construction methodologies. Energex requirements specify underground
electrical conduit be installed in a trench on a set alignment of 0-900mm from the property
boundary with a 600mm+ cover. These regulatory design factors both intrude into the trees’
theoretical root zone calculations as per AS 4970:2025 Protection of trees on development
sites, requiring further review and discussion.
With all three trees growing in maintained turf with no mulch and minimal topsoil depth, it is
unsurprising that both Tr1 and Tr2 are displaying reduced vigour and depleted canopy density.
Tr3, located adjacent to the existing informal driveway access, is in better health, with average
vigour and good canopy density.
