5.0 RELOCATION AND HANDLING OF SPECIMENS
No fauna will be handled unless necessary for the animal’s safety, and where fauna is handled
the duration of handling will be as short as possible to minimise stress incurred.

In the event that an EVNT species (or other protected native species) is identified within the
footprint of works during pre-clearance surveys or during construction, the following relocation
procedure will be initiated:

       i. Work will cease in the immediate vicinity of the sighting until the animal has moved
off or a qualified Fauna Spotter-catcher has removed it.
ii. If the animal appears to be healthy, it will be relocated to the compensatory habitat area
              by the Ecologist/Fauna Spotter-catcher.
iii. Specimens will be relocated into appropriate habitat features in such a way as to
              prevent predation from other fauna.
iv. Details of listed fauna relocations (e.g. lifecycle stage and sex of individual), location
found, and location released will be recorded in the Animal Breeding Places Register
(Appendix C) and Translocation Record Form template (Appendix D).
      v. In the event a specimen appears to be sick, or is dead, the specimen will be collected,
preserved (in formalin) and sent to the Queensland Museum. Details of sick or dead
EVNT species will be recorded and reported to NC/DES using the Sick or Dead
Species Collection Form template (Appendix F).
vi. In the event an amphibian appears to be sick or is dead, procedures for handling sick
or dead frogs outlined in the Interim hygiene protocol for handling amphibians
(Appendix B) will be followed (EHP, 2013). Frogs exhibiting one or more of the
symptoms for sick frogs and considered unlikely to survive transportation will be
              euthanised.
vii. Any animal requiring care or treatment will be immediately transported to a veterinarian
or licenced wildlife carer (Refer Section 6.3).

If amphibians or crustaceans are handled using bare hands, the handler must not have applied
insect repellents, perfumes, lotions, or other potentially toxic substances prior to handling. If
gloves are used, they must be non-powdered and talc-free vinyl and nitrile disposable gloves.
To prevent cross-contamination, new gloves and a clean plastic bag will be used for each frog
specimen. Care will be taken to ensure that specimens are kept moist and free of disease
following the procedures contained in the Interim hygiene protocol for handling amphibians
(EHP, 2013).

Tadpoles will be examined while held in dip nets and released immediately. Dip nets will be
sterilised with an appropriate anti-fungal agent prior to and after use.

All fauna species ‘not of concern’ will be managed by the Ecologist / Fauna Spotter-catcher and
all personnel working on site in accordance with an approved SMP for least concern fauna and
associated legislation and guidelines.

If other EVNT listed fauna are found onsite during the construction or monitoring phases, DES
will be notified and this IMP will be amended or another IMP will be prepared.
