6.0 COMPLIANCE
6.1 Monitoring and assessment
Monitoring EVNT species populations is necessary to determine potential impacts on their
populations and their breeding habitat, and to determine any changes to their population
dynamics. Species monitoring will be conducted following the methodology outlined below and
the results will be recorded on the Animal Breeding Places Register (Appendix C).
6.1.1 Monitoring locations
Monitoring will be undertaken throughout the whole site to determine if any potential EVNT species
breeding habitat areas have become “in use”. Any sites which are found to be providing breeding
habitat which is “in use” will continue to be monitored throughout the period that the SMP is active
for the project.
Control monitoring sites will be established in suitable undisturbed wetland areas to the north east
of the clearing area. The final location of these monitoring areas shall be determined and recorded
in consultation between the Project Manager, Site Foreman and Ecologist/Fauna Spotter-catcher
to ensure that the site will not be disturbed during any phase of the project and that it provides a
representative sample of the habitat characteristics of the area.
6.1.2 Species monitoring
Monitoring is to be undertaken by a qualified Ecologist/Fauna Spotter-catcher and carried out in
a systematic fashion using standardised methodology. A number of survey techniques will be
used within the monitoring sites to ensure that the survey results are a true indication of the
presence, abundance or absence of the target species. Required equipment to conduct
monitoring includes GPS, data recording sheet, call playback equipment, dip-net, torch and digital
camera. Information on the condition of the habitat and the weather conditions at the time of the
survey will be included, as this may be useful in later analysis. The following survey methods will
be utilised:
Visual search will be undertaken across the monitoring site for a period of 0.5 hours to
identify specimens undertaking surface activity.
Diurnal hand search will be used to detect species that shelter in or under particular
microhabitats (e.g. yabby holes, rocks, leaf litter, bark and vegetal debris). A hand search
will be undertaken for a period of 0.5 hours. Care will be taken to minimise the extent of
physical disturbance caused to the habitat while hand searching, with the searcher
replacing searched items in the position in which they were found.
Dip-net search will be conducted for 0.5 hours in areas of surface water to determine the
presence of Swamp crayfish and tadpoles.
Aural survey and / or call playback surveys, where recorded calls of the Wallum frogs
are played to determine their presence for a period of 0.5 hours.
