6.1.3 Timing and frequency
In general, amphibian and freshwater crayfish activity is determined by climatic and environmental
conditions. Accordingly, population monitoring will occur when suitable weather conditions prevail.
Surveys should be conducted when the species are active, in the period following rain, and
generally after dusk when night-time temperatures are above 18°C. A monitoring event will involve
monitoring for a period of two hours as required to cover all potential habitat areas within the
construction zone. Monitoring will be carried out according to the schedule provided in Table 4.

6.1.4 Assessment of results
In the event that the results of the monitoring program indicate that EVNT species populations may
be declining as a direct influence of the project, specific response criteria will be developed by NC
in consultation with DES, to determine whether declining populations (if evident from the
monitoring program) are attributable to the project. The response criteria will initially include
comparison of results from the monitoring program with the baseline monitoring and the predicted
impacts in the Project Environmental Assessment.
The response criteria will be used to determine if additional mitigation/management measures are
required to reverse any decline. Mitigation/management measures will be determined by the site
ecologist and NC’s Environmental Representative in consultation with DES. Such
mitigation/management measures may include creation or enhancement of frog and crayfish
habitat and dispersal pathways; establishment of new populations; and/or control of Mosquito fish
(Gambusia holbrooki) / Cane toad populations.
