5.0 BUSHFIRE HAZARD ASSESSMENT
5.1 Fire Weather Area / Climate and Bushfire Season

Granger et. al. (2000) summarise the fire season parameters for Southeast Queensland.

The bushfire season for South-East Queensland typically extends from mid to late winter through
to early summer. The greatest danger occurs in the periods towards the end of winter into spring,
especially if a good summer wet season which produced abundant growth of grass and other fuel
is followed by a winter of low rainfall and lengthy periods of dry westerly winds. The risk generally
eases following the first rains of the spring thunderstorm season and is largely absent during the
summer ‘wet’ season.

A Fire Danger Index (FDI) of 40 is used for the purposes of calculating Bushfire Attack Levels for
Queensland under the Australian Standard AS3959:2009. This reflects a lower fire weather
severity than southern states which depending on region typically adopt a FDI of 80 or 100.

5.2 History of Fire Frequency

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) regularly conduct controlled burns within the
Noosa National Park as part of the annual hazard reduction / conservation management program
for parks and forests. The burns are undertaken to help protect life and property in the event of a
wildfire. Please refer to the Noosa National Park Management Plan.
