Sight Distance Requirements
Sight distance requirements for private access driveways are specified in Australian Standard AS2890.1
Parking Facilities Part 1: Off-Street Car Parking (AS2890.1). The proposed site access is for a private
driveway and accordingly the sight distance at the access has been assessed against AS2890.1.
Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 4A: Signalised and Unsignalised Intersections provides sight
distance requirements for intersections. Nevertheless, sight distance at the site access has also been
assessed in accordance with Austroads, as requested by SARA.
Australian Standards
On a 90km/h road (ie Louis Bazzo Drive), AS2890.1 requires a desirable sight distance of 125m. The
proposed access driveway achieves 230m sight distance to the east and in excess of 300m to the west.
Therefore, the access location complies with AS2890.1 for sight distance.
Austroads
Sight distance has also been assessed against Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 4A. According to
Austroads, sight distance criteria for intersections often cannot be obtained at property accesses on
roadways with tighter horizontal and vertical alignments, or vegetation. Accordingly, Austroads allows the
sight distance requirements for domestic driveways be determined using the extended design domain
(EDD). Therefore, the existing site access has been assessed according to EDD requirements.
Austroads sight distance requirements are determined based on the sum of driver observation and
reaction times. For T-intersections on two-lane two-way roads with traffic volumes of less than 4,000
vehicles per day (ie Louis Bazzo Drive), Austroads requires a driver observation time of 1.5 seconds for
safe intersection sight distance (SISD) under EDD. Furthermore, for sight distance at domestic accesses (ie
an access that services three or less domestic units), Austroads requires mandatory application of an
observation time 0.5 seconds less than specified by the EDD (ie Table A8). Austroads Guide to Road
Design Part 3: Geometric Design specifies a reaction time of two seconds for alerted driving situations in
rural areas.
