INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 28 APRIL 2015
The contract for the collection and purchase of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and lead acid
batteries is currently out for tender.
The documentation for a Request for Quote is currently being developed for a contract for the
collection of household hazardous wastes which is due to expire in June. In the 2015/16
budget it is proposed to not limit the amount of domestic volumes of paint as an incentive to
promote proper disposal of this product.
The contract for green waste mulching is due for review before the expiry date in August.
Extensions to the current contract with ARG are available.
Hastings Street
A small working group has been convened to examine waste collection service issues on
Hastings Street. The group consists of Cr Jurisevic, Ross Sanderson (Infrastructure) Ben
Morrison and Ian Macfarlane (Cleanaway) and Gary Dolton (WMS). A site visit to view services in
progress led to the following items for further investigation and consideration:
The potential for removing Hastings Street peak period services to relieve traffic disruption.
Is there a need for a “Precinct Managers” or similar to assist in managing Hasting Street
waste?
Options for a centralised pick up zone to keep trucks out of Hastings Street.
Aggregate pick up points outside retail business that do not open until 9am (after service is
done)
Is there potential for public place recycling bins along the street or would this exacerbate
problems by another truck accessing the street?
Is there an opportunity for expanding cleaning contractor services along Main Beach?
WMS to investigate what is best practice in other centres with regard to collection techniques
in busy/congested and high profile areas
Is there potential for compactor bins to reduce service frequency?
Is there a need to clean and apply stickers to bins to clearly identify premises and extra
services provided for costing?
Is the presentation of the service vehicles suitable?
The group will meet again in the next month to discuss the issues further and consider a way
forward.
