LA90 Criterion
7 am-10 pm ≤ background LA90 + 5dB(A) 28 dB 35 + 5 = 40 dB(A)

stage.
Vehicle Noise (Car Parks and Driveways)
Vehicle noise is generally described in two components for driveways and
carparks. The first is from the vehicles being driven to / from carparks, and the
second is from engine starts and car door closures. The latter generally produces
higher short-duration LAMax noise events. The former tends to be relatively low in
sound level, but can be of significantly greater duration, thereby influencing the
overall LAeq sound level.
Use of the carpark is expected to be generally limited to between 8:00 am and
8:00 pm due to the nature of the accommodation on offer and subsequent low
private vehicle usage1, therefore only the daytime and evening criteria are
applicable.
Noise from vehicles on the driveway was modelled as a moving point source,
assuming 10 vehicles in a 1-hour period and using a sound power spectrum for
light diesel engines at low speeds2, shown in Table 7.

63 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 8000
LwA 65 67 74 82 80 78 77 66
Noise from car door closures and engine starts is not expected to produce noise
at the adjoining residence due to the carpark being in a basement and therefore
enclosed.
The noise levels expected from vehicle noise at the nearest residence are shown
in Table 8.
Table 8: Predicted Vehicle Noise Levels
Receiver LAeq(1 hour), dB LAmax, dB

The predicted noise impact levels indicate that:
• The LAeq(1 hour) will achieve the external noise criteria for the daytime and
internal noise criterion for the daytime and evening periods when allowing
for a 7 dB(A) reduction (free-field) through open windows.
• The LAMax (as proxy for the LA1(1 hour)) noise levels will achieve the external
noise criterion for the daytime and evening. The internal LA1 may be
exceeded, however this should be considered in the context of the
residence with respect to existing road traffic noise exposure.
