5.2 Subsurface conditions
The general subsurface profile encountered in test pits TP1 to TP3 comprised:
Topsoil: 0.2 m to 0.3 m of firm to stiff clay; overlying
Residual Soils: comprising low to medium plasticity, stiff to very stiff silty clay to depths ranging from
1.0 m to 1.1 m BGL at TP1 and TP2, and 3 m BGL at TP3; grading into
Extremely Weathered Material (Mudstone): comprising very stiff to hard, medium plasticity silty clay;
interbedded with
Mudstone: very low to low strength mudstone below a depth of 1.8 m to 2.7m BGL. Bands of higher
strength mudstone were encountered at TP1 only requiring ripper tyne excavation.
Test pits were completed at locations as shown on Figure 1.
5.3 Topography
The subject site is situated on knoll at the western end of a ridge running south-west down from a higher
knoll and ridge located to the east of the site. The ground slopes at about 15° to 20° on the northern and
southern sides of the knoll, and about 10° following the general ridge direction to the west. Site slopes were
measured using a handheld clinometer and are shown on Figure 1.
A defined gully line is to the north of the knoll that appears to feed into dams located to the east and west of
the residence. A less defined gully is located along the southern side of the knoll, which appears to capture
and drain less water than the northern gully.
