RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by The J & BCC Coordinator to the Services & Organisation
Committee meeting dated 7 February 2017, providing a half-yearly update on the activities of The
J and BCC to 31 December 2016.
REPORT
The purpose of this report is to advise Councillors of The J and BCC’s activities for the half-year
ending 31 December 2016.
The J continues to operate as a versatile, multi-use community venue that provides a 338 seat
theatre/Auditorium and a combination of flexible meeting spaces, conference rooms, commercial
kitchen and facilities for hire which are complemented by covered outdoor areas and stylish open
foyers. It hosts a wide range of activities, performances and live entertainment. It is also home to
current tenants the University of the Sunshine Coast (and TAFE) and Noosa Community Radio.
The J continues to develop relationships with numerous community groups and is still the venue
of choice for regular users including Noosa Chorale, Noosa Heads Jazz Club, Noosa Music
Society, Hillsong Church, and school and commercial dance/theatre groups including Sunshine
Coast Youth Theatre, Coast Academy of Song and Dance, Little Seed Theatre Company,
Performing Arts Factory, Hamburger Productions Music School and Jally Productions, who
conduct a range of youth activities, performances, awards and presentation ceremonies.
The Bicentennial Community Centre (BCC) includes the Main Hall, Annexe and Demountable
buildings. The BCC is used by individual community members and organisations for a variety of
community, sporting and cultural activities including educational/fitness classes, meetings,
rehearsals, workshops, presentations and social events. The BCC Main Hall is the permanent
home of the Noosa Gymnastics Club. The adjacent demountable building currently hosts a
permanent user, Little Seeds Theatre Group. Lease negotiations between Council and Education
for Generations for the demountable have been completed with the Noosa Montessori School set
to commence operations in Term 1 2017.
