PLANNING & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 14 OCTOBER 2014
Ey PROPOSAL FOR A BOUNDARY CHANGE
went to the successful candidate whose power base is Bli Bli. In effect both
Councillors could well have been elected without one person in our area voting.
This situation is only going to deteriorate when more and more people populate
the SC as the push is to build the southern part of the Shire with population
growth projections measuring in the tens of thousands over the next decade.
We cannot and will not be able to be effectively represented, given our minnow
size compared to the rest of the Sunshine Coast and we will struggle to be able
to obtain any priority in infrastructure spending, such as demonstrated in Ted
Fitzgerald’s report.
Culture, Character and Identity
The residents of the EDV area share many common values with the Noosa Shire
such as a respect for the environment (i.e. the Noosa Biosphere Ltd approached
the residents of the EDV area to jointly prepare a submission to UNESCO to have
this area included in the Noosa Biosphere); a respect for the heritage value and
character of small towns; a preference for balanced development which respects
the desires of local residents as well as the future residents; and a commitment
to quality over quantity when it comes to development projects.
Any casual observer coming into the EDV area is struck by the obvious branding
of Noosa that has been used by developers to market our area as part of Noosa
(Noosa Valley Drive, Botanica Noosa, Noosa Panorama to name but a few).
Likewise, many local businesses have included the word Noosa in their branding
(e.g. Noosa Hinterland Realty, Fruits of Noosa, Noosa Reds) and have signs
advertising this in the EDV area. Indeed Eumundi describes itself as “the
gateway to Noosa”. There are no equivalent visual signs that suggest we are
part of the Sunshine Coast.
Water Catchments
Lake Weyba is a very important water catchment area for Noosa. If Weyba
Downs and Peregian Beach (West) were part of Noosa Shire this would enable
better management of Lake Weyba. The Lake itself is in Noosa Shire and the
land in the north and east is in Noosa Shire. The western and southern areas of
the lake are in the Sunshine Coast Council area. If all of the surrounding lands
were within one shire, decisions on land usage that could affect water
management could be more effectively managed. No better illustration of this
could be made than the current complexity of managing the decision making
around the Noosa on Weyba development project.
Keyser Creek which is within the proposed development area of the Noosa on
Weyba project, would have been tragically affected by the run off of this
