3.2.4. Refuse Minimisation
Refuse minimisation is an important part of any site operation. At a minimum, the following should be
implemented. Additional refuse minimisation options can be found in Appendix B.
On commencement of operation of the hotel a baseline waste composition audit should be undertaken by
an external contractor, this will highlight the contents and make-up of each refuse stream and help shape
future waste strategies and opportunities for improvement. The specific operational activities to improve
waste minimisation and future recycling targets will be governed by the result of the waste composition
audit however, the appointed waste caretaker or appropriate personnel will develop an action plan to
improve performance outcomes based on audit recommendations.
Refuse minimisation requires regular reviewing to ensure operational sustainability of refuse volumes,
equipment and economic feasibility. It is recommended that refuse weights and movements are noted and
reviewed. An external review is usually conducted 12 to 18 months after the implementation of the plan.

Education and Communication
On-going education is important to ensure people continue to use the facilities as originally intended. All
leasing contracts should contain clauses pertaining to waste management arrangements and use of any
associated equipment.
