INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 3 MARCH 2015
Aspher Review of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre Report | 7
Key themes and community opinions
Key principles - Role and function:
* Animportant community asset - part of Cooroy’s history, heritage and community
* Key role in building social capital
* Strong support for maintaining a visual arts focus
* Support for maintaining a cultural role and supporting emerging artists
* Needs to be sustainable on many levels — e.g. sound financial base, wide community
support, strong management model.
Key principles - Activities and programs
* Recognition of the importance of the existing pottery facilities and users
¢ Activities should complement, enhance and integrate with existing services and
businesses, not compete
* Needs to be dynamic and have more energy
* Support for extending functions from visual arts to other community and cultural
needs and activities, such as learning, music performances, lunches, and recreational
activities.
Key principles - Governance and support:
* Should be community run and driven
* Governance needs to be sustainable, and for some proposers, financial support from
Council and/or other sources is a requirement
* Council needs to continue to maintain the building.
Key principles — Users, usage and accessibility
* Open to the broader community, not just a select few
¢ Needs to be better used, with access and opening hours extended to include evenings
and weekends.
Opportunities identified that may need to be addressed in future planning and development
* Some building limitations need to be dealt with in order to facilitate more effective
and efficient use of discrete and overall areas within the CBFAC. For example: poor
acoustics for some activities when there are concurrent users and access to bathrooms
and kitchen from other areas
* There is an opportunity to incorporate old and new ideas relevant to Cooroy and
broader Noosa e.g. ceramics, heritage, biosphere, broader creative industries (such as
creative community-working spaces)
* As appropriate, the building should be used to meet the needs identified in the local
area e.g. helping young people, a place for life-long learning.
