Wessel Petroleum Pty Ltd – GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION - Proposed Service Station Reconstruction, 52-54 Mary Street and Weyba Road,
Noosaville
Subsurface conditions encountered can be broadly grouped into the following material types:-
Fill
Pavement Formation:- Concrete slabs from 110mm to 160mm thick in BH’s 1, 7, 8 and
9) over a very loose to loose bedding sand and bitumen wearing surface from 40mm to
70mm thick in BH’s 2, 3 and 5 over a dense Sandy GRAVEL layer (70mm to 180mm
thick). A lower level bitumen layer (90mm thick) was encountered beneath the
pavement gravel in BH5 (likely to represent the old bitumen pavement that was filled
over).
General Fill:- Encountered as very loose to loose and some medium dense Silty SAND /
SANDS and Gravelly SANDS. A zone of concrete pieces was noted in BH6 from 0.3m
to 0.4m depth (possibly the old concrete pavement that had been broken up and filled
over). The fill material extended to depths of between 0.3m and 0.6m in all boreholes,
except BH9 where the loose to medium dense Silty SAND fill appeared to extend to
2.6m depth (possibly the underground tank backfill).
Natural Soils
The typical natural profile consisted of an upper zone of medium dense Silty SAND (SM)
and SAND (SP) material, with some loose sandy soil (BH’s 1 and 6). This upper zone
extended to depths of between 2.4m and 3.1m where a dense and dense to very dense
Silty SAND (SM) strata was intersected that could be described as indurated. A medium
dense to dense consistency within this layer was noted in BH’s 6 and 7.
The indurated sands extended to the termination depths of BH’s 2, 3 and 4 and were
underlain by very stiff CLAYS (CI-CH/CH) in BH’s 1, 5 and 9 and medium dense and
dense sandy strata in BH’s 6, 7, 8 and 9.
A summary of the subsurface profile is presented in Table 2.
