MCU14/0106 Appendix J - Retail Needs Assessment
Urbis intercept surveys were conducted in late September and profile the usage of each of the major
precincts within Noosa – Noosa Junction, Noosaville, Tewantin and Hastings Street. Results of these
surveys demonstrate that these areas are multipurpose destinations where almost 30 different
activities are undertaken with an average of 2.4 tasks per customer per visit. As a result, it can be
concluded that each of the four precincts that were assessed perform a different role and function,
based on the range of activities undertaken by their customers.
Turnover performance for all listed centres outline that those centres that comprise supermarkets and
a strong food catering offer are generally performing better than those centres that do not. This
reflects the current strength of the current supermarket offer within the main trade area.
The most noteworthy approved development is the expansion of Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore
which is expected to include a David Jones department store and additional mini-major and specialty
retail floorspace. There are a small number of other approved developments within the Noosa Civic
trade area, however these are relatively minor and in some cases neighbourhood orientated. Given
the nature, location and scale of these developments, it is unlikely that the impact of the Noosa Civic
expansion will be significantly different from the calculated impacts outlined later in section 8.
