Fauna Management
47. Vegetation must only be removed or disturbed in accordance with a fauna management
plan prepared by a qualified person* and endorsed through an Operational Works
approval and must address the following:
Site inspection
a. Prior to any site disturbance, a site inspection will be completed by a suitably
qualified person* to identify any hollow-bearing trees and/or other significant
habitat features (i.e. den sites, nests, hollowed termitarium etc.) These will be
clearly marked in the field with high visibility paint as well as shown on
appropriately scaled plans.
Pre-clearing fauna trapping
b. Subsequent to the site inspection, and prior to commencement of site clearing
works, a pre-clearing trapping program will be completed targeting native ground-
dwelling and arboreal mammals. The trapping program is to be for 4 nights and
cover the entirety of the subject site, with clearing to commence within 2 days after
the trapping program finishes. Any animals captured will be relocated to suitable
habitat area/s in the immediate locality identified by the project ecologist/ fauna
spotter, or otherwise the location advised in advance by Noosa Shire Council and/
or the Department of Environment and Science (DES).
c. Once the area has been trapped, vegetation can be cleared. Any hollow-bearing
trees and/or other significant habitat features identified during the initial site
inspection will be marked on site. All vegetation clearing will be completed with a
suitably qualified fauna spotter/catcher in attendance.
Hollow inspection and removal
d. A climbing arborist will be used in conjunction with a chainsaw operator and
suitably qualified fauna spotter/catcher to inspect and remove hollows (that have
been previous identified by the fauna spotter) a necessary prior to habitat tree
felling.
e. If fauna are located in the hollow, the handling of any fauna will be managed with
the onsite fauna spotter
48. Hollow logs/branches that can be salvaged for further use (habitat creation) are to be
done at this stage. A thermal drone must be utilised each morning prior to any tree
removal works to ensure Koalas are not present on the site.
49. Permanent artificial nesting boxes must be installed (at a rate of 2 x boxes per hollow
removed, alternatively a minimum of 10 boxes) within the site and the Environmental
Management and Conservation Zone to provide compensatory habitat for arboreal
mammals and hollow dependent avian species. Details of nest box type is to be included
in the Fauna Management Plan. The works must be undertaken in accordance with an
Operational Works approval.
Bushfire Management
50. The development must be carried out in accordance with the Bushfire Hazard
Assessment and Mitigation Plan Prepared by Rob Friend and Associates dated May
2025, revision 07 listed within this Decision Notice. *(Refer to Advisory Note)
