Weight of recyclables collected from yellow lidded bins dropped significantly by over 400 tonnes.
It is likely that this was due to the introduction of the container refund scheme, which was
introduced in November 2018.
Garden waste comparison
2017FY (tonnes) 2018FY (tonnes) 2019FY (tonnes)
Garden waste collected 1,273 3,452 3,756
Self-haul residential 6,881 6,477 7,154
Self-haul commercial 4,580 3,714 3,857
It is encouraging to see the weight of garden waste diverted from landfill increase across both
collection and self-haul services. Council’s garden waste collection service diverted an additional
300 tonnes of waste in 2019FY.
Bulk kerbside collection
At the time of writing, the 2019 Bulk Kerbside Collection is still in process. The collection method
this year mirrors that provided last year. Resource Recovery Australia are collecting any suitable
reusable goods or resources. Cleanaway are continuing to segregate and collect metals, e-waste
and timber separately to waste.
This year has seen major problems with asbestos contamination in a number of waste piles. In
addition to being a significant public health and environmental risk, the cost of clean-up to
Council is likely to be significant. A further specific report on Bulk Kerbside Collection will follow in
2020.
Reviva
Noosa’s new and improved tip shop, Reviva, opened for business on the 3rd of July 2018
following significant improvements to the site and retail practice. In their first year they have
recovered approximately 389 tonnes of resalable items. They have also processed nearly 4000
mattresses, recovering and recycling a further 12.5 tonnes of foam which had previously been
sent to landfill. They have also already had success in transitioning previously unemployed
workers through to full time employment. The Waste Section looks forward to another successful
year working with Resource Recovery Australia (RRA) to further reduce waste to landfill. RRA’s
first twelve months of operation have seen them meet all Key Performance Indicators required
under the Licence.
